SS-Doc_003: The Hand Off
Location: Maintenance Tunnel Sector 7 (The Gray Area)
POV: Dual (Rollz & LaMar)
The border between the world of gods and the world of rats wasn't a wall—it was a sewer.
Deep beneath the foundation of the Sync Tower, in the maintenance tunnels where the climate-control exhaust vented into the city, the air was thick with steam and rust. This was the "Signal Shadow" at its deepest point. No AR. No 7G. Just concrete and dripping water.
Marcus stood in the dark, checking his analog watch. The silence here was heavy.
A service hatch hissed open ten yards away.
Roland stepped out. He was wearing a stealth-hoodie designed to scatter paparazzi drones, but down here, stripped of the digital overlay, he just looked... expensive. And terrified.
"You came," Roland whispered. His voice echoed, sounding small without the studio reverb.
"You called," Marcus replied, leaning against a rusted pipe. He didn't move to hug him. "You look like a glitch, Ro."
Roland flinched. He pulled his hood down. His face was pale, and for a second, his left eye twitched—a side effect of the neural implant fighting for a signal that wasn't there.
"I don't have much time," Roland said, glancing nervously at the hatch. "Security sweep cycle is every fifteen minutes. If they find me this deep in the stack, they’ll scrub me."
"Then why are you here?" Marcus asked, his voice hard. "You miss the smell?"
"I missed the truth," Roland snapped. The sudden anger made him look like the old Roland for a second. "I needed to see you, Marc. I needed to... I brought you something."
Roland reached into his pocket and pulled out the modified platinum ring. He pressed a hidden catch, and a tiny, jagged data chip popped out.
"Take it."
Marcus stared at the chip. "What is it? Credits? A payout?"
"It's the session," Roland said, his voice trembling. "The real one. Before the AI got its hands on it. Before they turned it into that candy-coated trash they're dropping tonight."
Roland stepped closer, desperation in his eyes. "I need you to listen to it, Marc. Just you. I need you to know that I haven't lost it. The flow, the metaphors, the pain... it's all still in there. I’m still the best. I’m just... buried."
Marcus took the chip. It felt warm.
"You want validation," Marcus said softly. "You want me to tell you you're still the King, even though you wearing a collar."
"I want my brother to know I'm alive!" Roland hissed. He gripped Marcus’s arm. "Promise me. Promise me you’ll keep this safe. If this leaks... if Sync finds out I smuggled raw stems... they won't just fire me. They’ll erase me. You understand?"
Marcus looked down at the chip. He thought about the kids in the Deadzone. He thought about the "Penthouse" clip he heard earlier—the robotic, soulless perfection.
He looked at Roland’s fearful eyes.
"Yeah," Marcus lied. His voice was steady. "It's safe with me, Ro. Just for my ears."
Roland exhaled, a massive weight lifting off his shoulders. He finally smiled—a real smile, not the AR version. "Thanks, Marc. I knew I could trust you."
A siren wailed in the distance. The security cycle.
"Go," Marcus said. "Get back to your cage."
Roland scrambled back to the hatch. He paused one last time. "I love you, brother. One day... I'll get us both out."
"Love you too," Marcus whispered.
The hatch clanged shut.
Marcus stood alone in the steam. He looked at the chip in his palm. He felt the weight of the lie burning a hole in his hand.
"You ain't getting us out, Ro," Marcus said to the darkness. "You just gave me the key to break the lock."
He pocketed the chip and turned back toward the Lower Stack.
